10:00 AM -- 10:55 AM

Ramona: OJ, Cafe scramble (eggs, sausage, onions, cheese, hash browns), coffee

Jim: V8 juice, eggs Benedict, coffee

There is nothing better in Waco than CC for breakfast. We always get so nostalgic there -- especially when we celebrate our wedding anniversary on Sunday morning -- 217 weeks!

I finally remembered to get the hollandaise sauce on the side, and that worked out well. Ramona even spread some on her scramble to good effect.

Dinner -- 5/24/08

Carino's Italian Grill
1411 N. Valley Mills Dr
Waco, TX 76710

5:00 - 5:50 PM

Ramona: Caesar salad, Bowtie Festival, iced tea

Jim: Caesar salad, chicken gorgonzola penne pasta, iced tea

Shared: Tiramisu

Carino's is having a special -- two can dine for $19.99, so we thought we would risk it. Carino's has been a roller coaster for us. A couple of really good meals, followed by a couple of really bad ones! Tonight, all was well. The food was hot and delicious.

One minor flaw -- a waiter (not the one that took our order) delivered our plates to the table behind us. When he announced the dishes, they took one, then said the other was wrong. We tried to catch his ear, but he walked away. Fortunately, our waiter heard me and stopped him. He retrieved the misdelivered plate and gave us our dishes.

Dinner -- 5/23/08

Best Buffet
565 Westview Village Shopping Center
(Between Waco Drive and New Road on N. Valley Mills Dr.)
Waco, TX 76710

254.741.9999

Ramona Buffet: Egg roll, spring roll, egg drop soup, Shrimp, chicken (several types), fried rice, crab, fruit, sushi, iced tea

Jim Buffet: Buffet: Egg roll, won ton soup, snow Shrimp, chicken (several types), crab, sushi, fruit, jello, iced tea

For years we dined at Summer Palace II Chinese Buffet, but that seems to have fallen off lately. Then we discovered Taste of China and really liked it. Unfortunately, it closed last January, so were back at SPII, but only reluctantly. Now, Waco has a new Asian Buffet, and it is great. The selection is wide, the sushi is fresh and tasty, and the dishes, including the soup, all seemed at the right temperature for us.

The decor was also impressive, and the wait staff was pleasant and attentive. This is now our number #1 buffet in Waco.

Jim's fortune: "You are heading for a land of sunshine" How did they know we are going to California later this summer?

Ramona's fortune: "You have an iron will, which helps you succeed in everything."

Dinner -- 5/20/08

Logan's Roadhouse
2806 West Loop 340
Waco, TX 76711
254.662.2036

http://www.logansroadhouse.com/

5:45 - 7:00 PM

Ramona & Jim: Special dinner for two: Caesar salad, 11 oz. sirloins, broiled shrimp scampi, potatoes, iced tea

Logan's is not the best place in Waco, but with so many good choices, that is not a criticism of Logan's. Their steaks are good, just a tad less tender than Outback, but several steps below 135 Prime. Nonetheless, we enjoy Logan's mainly because it is not as noisy as Texas Roadhouse.

Our steaks were tender, although Ramona's was just a bit better than mine. The service was good, and, all-in-all, a nice dinner out on a week night!

Golden Corral Buffet and Grill #563

Waco, TX 76710

9:10 - 10:00 AM

Ramona: OJ, Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, fruit, coffee

Jim: OJ, Scrambled eggs, ham, hash browns, fruit, cherry bar square, coffee

We haven't been here in ages, and now we remember why. Most of the food is cold or lukewarm, it is always mobbed and noisy. We also eat too much. I know, it doesn't make any sense, but there you have it. GC is off our list -- until we forget again.

Dinner -- 5/16/2008

Shogun Japanese Steakhouse
1623N. Valley Mills Dr.
Waco, TX 76710

254.772.5678

5:15 - 6:35 PM

Ramona & Jim: sushi platter (super white tuna, sea eel, yellow fin tuna) Shogun special steak and shrimp for two, miso soup, house salad, iced tea (hot tea for Jim).

We started out for another restaurant, but as we approached Shogun, Ramona said, "Turn here!" Fortunately, I was expecting something of the kind, so I wasn't surprised. We were
surprised to be seated with a colleague of mine, and a friend of hers and her family out for a birthday celebration.

We were not surprised at the dinner however! The same jokes by the chef never get old. The same tricks with ketchup, onions, burning oil, we always have a good time. The sushi was served a little more quickly this time, and that was a good thing,

When we leave Shogun we are always smiling, always satisfied, never stuffed, and glad Ramona said, "Turn here!"

breakfast -- 5/11/08

Denny's
1100 S. 9th St
Waco, TX 76706

254.753.7882

10:30 to 11:20 AM

http://www.dennys.com/en/

Ramona: Two-egg breakfast, bacon, sauasgae, English muffin, OJ, coffee

Jim: Grand Slam (two eggs sunny side up, sausage, grits, English muffin, coffee

When I first moved to Waco, I lived down 9th street from this Denny's. I would go there often since it was convenient and inexpensive. I never really felt comfortable there, and today was no different. This Denny's (like most I have been in with a couple of exceptions) are all the same -- noisy, cramped, and sticky. I never feel as if I am in a clean environment there.

Every time a server or a customer passed behind me, I got a back rub. Our order was also messed up, and if it were not for the "buy-one-get-one free" coupon, I would have seriously not known what we were charged. The server made a mistake on my order and a mistake entering it for the ticket. This Denny's, at least, is off our list for breakfast.

Dinner -- 5/10/08

Italian Garden
10207 China Spring Road
Waco, TX 76708

254.836.8900

6:40 -7:35 PM

Ramona: House salad with ranch dressing, Veal Marsala over spaghetti, cannoli with chocolate sauce, iced tea

Jim: House salad with Italian dressing, Veal Parmigiana over spaghetti, cannoli with chocolate sauce, iced tea

We need to keep this place open. The food is terrific, inexpensive, and with a wonderfully pleasant staff and atmosphere. We were surprised no one was there when we arrived, but quite a few tables were taken when we left. The bread is also excellent -- warm and flaky. The canolis also took me back to the great Italian restaurants and stores in South Philadelphia.

breakfast -- 5/10/08

Cafe Cappuccino
4700 Bosque Blvd.
Waco, TX 76710
254-772-3739

10:30 to 11:15 AM

Ramona: Traditional French toast, bacon, orange juice, coffee

Jim: Traditional French toast, sausage patties, latte

CC has so many fond memories for us, we love to share a weekend breakfast there. This is an almost exact repeat of our last visit, and for good reason.

I was thinking of Eggs Benedict, but I find it hard to bring myself to eat eggs on Saturday. When we were kids, my family always had pancakes on Saturday, and eggs on Sunday. My oldest sister began referring to the weeknd as "pancake" and "egg." French toast is cheating just a bit, but the syrup carries the day. This is one of those places we have never had a bad meal. The french toast is perfect and delicious in every way.

Dinner -- 5/9/08

Outback Steakhouse #4468
4500 Franklin Ave
Waco, TX 76710

254.772.5449

5:30 - 6:40 PM

http://www.outback.com/

Ramona: Chopped bleu cheese salad, Strawberry Swirl Margarita, 7 oz. "Victoria" filet, loaded baked potato, iced tea

Jim: Caesar salad, 16oz Prime Rib with creamy horseradish sauce, loaded baked potato, iced tea

Shared: Spinich and artichoke dip with pumpernickel toast, lobster tail

This was a celebration of the end of Spring semester, and we both craved steak, so Outback was the best choice. I always get the prime rib, because it is the best PR in Waco. Ramona always gets a filet, and both were good. We were a bit fearful about going out to eat this weekend, because of "the wedding" in Crawford. Everyone was predicting jammed restaurants, but not Friday night.

Despite the lack of a crowd, once aagin we felt rushed and pestered by our server. I am going to begin saying something. We were not finished our salads when she brought our entrees. I guess the manager believed the rumors. Even when we left there were empty tables and no one waiting.

Dinner -- 5/3/08

Waco, TX 76710

254.776.1072

5:35 -- 6:50 PM

Ramona: Egg Drop Soup, chicken, snow peas, water chestnuts, iced tea

Jim: Wonton Soup, Egg roll, Chicken and Chinese Vegetables, hot tea

After a day at the spa and shopping, our favorite Chinese restaurant was the perfect place to end up. Always quiet, always excellent food, and always good service, Cathy House is moving to the top of our favorite places in Waco.

Jim: Chicken Caesar Salad, iced tea, key lime pie

Ramona received a gift certificate for a holiday package at Canyon Oaks. I included lunch for two, and I got the chance to relax and read for a couple of hours while she was pampered. The lunch was good and fresh. Nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Cheddar's Waco
4208 Franklin Ave
Waco, TX 76710
254.741.1411

http://www.cheddars.com/

5:40- 7:00 PM

Ramona: Mushroom burger, margarita swirl (2!)

Jim: 11 oz. sirloin, baked potato and baby carrots. iced tea

Shared: onion rings with ranch and spicy sauce

This was the first time we got this appetizer, and it was delicious. the onions were crispy and the breading delicious. The steak was tender and juicy. I love chewing a piece of tender, medium rare steak for the juice and the wonderful taste. Most of the time, I eat my sides and only about 1/3 of the steak so I can savor the best part of the meal. Ramona's burger was huge, and she had to abandon part of the roll, along with a half dozen of the onion rings from the huge pile.

This was our 5th visit since we began this blog, and countless others since it opened about three years ago. It hasn't changed a bit. One of those rare places that has never disappointed us. What a great way to celebrate the end of the school year!

Dinner -- 5/1/08

Dickey's Barbecue Pit
621 North Valley Mills
Waco, TX 76711

254.776.2228

http://www.dickeysbarbecuerestaurants.com/

Ramona: 1 meat plate: pulled pork, barbecue beans, escalloped potatoes, iced tea

Jim: 2 meat plate: pulled pork, smoked turkey breast, barbecue beans, yellow potato salad, iced tea

The pulled pork was especially delicious this time -- tender and juicy. The turkey was also good. Unfortunately, the frozen ice cream machine was broken, so no free dessert! This is rapidly becoming our favorite barbeque place in Waco. Of course, nothing will ever dislodge Bridge's in Shelby, NC as the top spot. We had a two-for-one dinner coupon, woo-who!

-Jim

Dinner -- 4/30/08

Red Lobster
5925 W. Waco Dr.
(at Richland Mall)
Waco, TX 76710-6356

254.741.1766

http://www.redlobster.com/

5:30 - 6:30 PM

Ramona: Chef's pasta (half serving) with shrimp, lobster, linguini, and iced tea

Jim: Broiled sea food platter (shrimp, stuffed flounder, scallops), iced tea

We had a coupon for $4.00 off that expired on April 30th, so we could not let that go to waste. We were always cautious about red Lobster, but our last few visits have been great. Again, a busy week, and no time to cook, so we went and found it uncrowded and unrushed.

Dinner -- 4/29/08

Beatnix's Coffeehouse
1826 Lake Shore Drive
Waco, TX 76708

254.755.6690

4:50 - 5:35 PM

Ramona: Grilled chicken panini foccacio, iced tea

Jim: Turkey wrap, latte

Sadly, we recently learned that Beatnix's is moving from this great location near where I work and home -- halfway between in fact. The atmosphere is great, lots of interesting entertainment opportunities during the week, including an open mic poetry night every Thursday from 8-10 PM. The coffee is great, and the sandwiches and wraps superb. An early morning latte and a black forest cake muffin are wonderful ways to start the day.

Dinner -- 4/28/08

Cotton Patch
5501 Bosque Blvd
Waco, TX 76710

254.772.4200

http://www.cottonpatch.com/

5:30 - 6:45 PM

Ramona: Pot roast, black-eyed pea, mashed potatoes, iced tea

Jim: Chicken fried chicken, broccoli rice casserole, carrots, iced tea

We can mail this one in every time. Cotton Patch has a limited menu, but everything is good. I absolutely love the chicken fried chicken. The slab, and I do mean slab of chicken is juicy and the breading is delicious. The dinner rolls are also great -- steamy and soft. Ramona always opts for corn cakes. We have this on-going debate about whether or not "corn bread" is really bread. I say no, it is too crumbly, like a dry cake. Today they gave us corn muffins, so debate resolved. I also claim blackeyed "peas" are not really peas, since they look like beans.

Dinner -- 4/27/08

Olive Garden #1222
5921 W. Waco Dr.
at Richland Mall
Waco, TX 76710-6356

254.

http://www.olivegarden.com/default_f.asp

Ramona: Caesar salad, bread sticks, Ravioli di Portobello, iced tea

Jim: Caesar salad, bread sticks, Chicken Parmesean, iced tea

Decent for a chain, and my favorite here is the Chicken parmesean. Ramona is a little more adventurous, as she seems to get something different every time. It wasn't too crowded this visit, and thankfully, we were not rushed. The bottomless salad and the bread sticks are a real treat. Great place for a quick dinner during the week. We have both been busy this week, so we went out a lot.
