Cathay House had just opened when we arrived, and there were already three tables taken. By the time we left, the place was full. We think people have begun to discover one of the best Chinese restaurants around anywhere.

We have often mentioned the quiet ambiance, the coziness in addition to the excellent food, but the service is also great. Add to that more than reasonable prices, and anyone can find a near perfect dining experience in Waco.

Jim and Ramona: Lunch buffet, iced tea

Cathay House, as regular readers of our blog will know, is one of our two favorite Chinese restaurants in Waco (the other being Magic China). But we'd never been to the Sunday lunch buffet until this week. Based on a recommendation from one our readers, we decided to give it a try and were not disappointed.

Cathay's lunch buffet doesn't have as many options as some of the other Chinese buffets in town, e.g. Summer Palace. But everything on the buffet is wonderful. They had three soups, including chicken rice which Jim tried for the first time. In the entree section were several dishes with a variety of meats and levels of spiciness. I ate a little of several of the chicken-based dishes and also wanted a sample of the pepper steak, which is a dish I rarely order but like a lot. Their pepper steak was one of the best I've ever tasted. Jim and I agreed that the beef was so tender and tasty that we want to order that again sometime.

Jim and I also agree that we'll go to the Sunday brunch again soon. However, we must warn you that it's a lot more crowded and noisy then than during weeknights when we enjoy the quiet.

Jim's fortune: You will soon be in the limelight.
Ramona's fortune: Your lucky number for the week is the number two.

Ramona: Egg drop soup, Lemon chicken, fried rice, iced tea

Jim: Won Ton soup, egg roll, Happy Family (Shrimp, scallops, chicken, beef, roast pork, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, broccoli, baby corn, carrots), steamed rice, iced tea

We both had long days at work, and neither of us felt like cooking, so where better than Cathy House. As always, it was quiet (no more than two other tables occupied) and delicious food. Ramona brought home half of her dish for lunch on Wednesday. I was starved, but not after finishing one of my favorite dishes.

Ramona's truth cookie: "You are a true and sincere friend"

Jim's fortune cookie: "Be prepared to receive something special"

Another perfect little meal. We never mentioned the chips and sweet dip, but those chips are always fresh and the sauce is wonderful. My fortune cookie seemed a bit limp, but Ramona's was fresh and crisp. 4-7/8 stars this visit.

Jim's fortune: "Act with kindness. People return good will to the place that has done them well."

Absolutely our favorite sit down Chinese restaurant in Waco. Pleaseant, quiet, and excellent service. The food is also always good and plenty of it. Ramona brought home half her dish.

A must stop on a night out in Waco.

Dinner -- 1/8/08

Cathay House
825 Wooded Acres
Waco, TX 76710
254.776.1072

5:35 -- 6:50 PM

Ramona: Egg drop soup, egg roll, "Three Treasures from the Orient" (Shrimp, scallops, sauteed with snow peas, broccoli, mushrooms, and baby corn in a white sauce), and iced tea.
Fortune Cookie: "Your friend or partner is needing your advice and encouragement."

Jim: Egg drop soup, egg roll, Chicken with Chinese Mushrooms and snow pea pods, bamboo shoots, in a white sauce, and hot tea. Fortune Cookie: "If you go fishing, your catch will be plentiful."

It seems as if all the Chinese restaurants in Waco are turning into buffets, and we have our favorites of those, but Cathay House is strictly sit down. The dining expereince here is quiet and peaceful. Soft Chinese music plays in the background, and even when it is crowded, the conversations are hushed. The service is always good, and the soup and egg rolls are perfect. We both agreed we had never had a bad meal there, and have eaten most of the dishes without the warning of "spicy" on them.
