Jim: Creamed chicken soup, roast turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, carrots, iced tea
Ramona: Vegetable beef soup, roast turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, candied yams, iced tea
The Dining Car is another of our favorite spots to go in Philadelphia. Jim and I both indulged in their great turkey dinner. Seems like the turkey portion was twice as big as the one we had at Cracker Barrel the week before. Jim's mother was able to repay him for his mushroom taunt that morning. She had lima beans in her vegetable beef soup!

Red Robin Diner

Philadelphia, PA 19135

9:00 --9:50 AM
$
Ramona: Scrapple, scrambled egg, fried potatoes, orange juice, coffee
Jim: Ham, cheese, and mushroom omellette, English muffin, fried potatoes, tomato juice, coffee
Two days in a row having scrapple is not too much for me. It's one of those foods we don't have in Texas, so I take advantage of the opportunity when I can. (We bought two packs to bring home with us in our cooler.) Jim had a tasty omellette, taunting his mother with mushooms, which she can't stand to see.

Ramona: Scrapple, pancakes, orange juice, coffee
Jim: Scrapple, two poached eggs on an English muffin, fried potatoes, tomato juice, coffee
A trip to Philadelphia wouldn't be complete without breakfast with scrapple. The Red Robin Diner is just a block away from Jim's parents' house, so it's our favorite place to go. The service is always great. The cost of the breakfast includes the juice and coffee. Can't beat it!

Jim: Ham & cheese hoagie, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, oregano; Herr's potato chips
Ramona: Turkey & cheese hoagie, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato; Herr's potato chips, diet coke
First stop in Philadelphia was for hoagies from Greenman's Deli. This local eatery is on the way to Jim's parents' house, and that's what we were in the mood for, since we didn't make town in time for a nice dinner out. Nobody makes a better hoagie than Greenman's; there are several locations in the Philly area, but the one on Robbins Ave. is the original. Jim ate his whole sandwich, accompanied by iced tea his mother had made just for him. I saved half of my hoagie for a nice snack the next day.

Dinner -- 6/13/08
Gallo's Seafood
8101 Roosevelt Blvd
Philadelphia, PA 19152
215.333.0484
http://gallos-seafood.com/
6:15 - 7:45 PM
Ramona: Grey Goose Orange Cosmo, Broiled combo (shrimp, scallops, flounder, deviled crab, crab cake), baked potato, cole slaw
Jim: Grey Goose Orange Cosmo, Broiled combo (shrimp, scallops, flounder, deviled crab, crab cake), baked potato, eggplant parmesan
Shared: 12 blue point oysters (raw)
Another must stop place in Philly, and this was an especially good visit, since we treated my parents for Father's day. The food was perfectly prepared, which we expected because of the long wait. Everything is made to order. The OTC (Original Trenton Crackers) and horseradish really opens the sinuses while waiting for the appetizer. The atmosphere was relaxed, and despite the crowd on a Friday night (including a wedding reception!) the wait for a table was short and the service great.
We thought the portion seemed smaller than last time, but we left well-satisfied. My mother could not finish her deviled crab cake. The rolls were also first rate.

You Zen
2455 Grant Ave.
Philadelphia, PA 19114

12:55 - 1:59 PM
Ramona, Jim & Mary: Miso soup, Sushi platter for 2: 8 nigiri [2 tuna, 2 shrimp, 2 salmon, 1 fluke, 1 eel] & 4 rolls [California, Tuna, Yellow Tail, eel and cucumber], 4 pieces of eel, iced tea, fried banana and honey
Yum!! This sushi was fresh and delicious. The pieces were a good size. The miso soup was tasty and steaming hot. The only problem was getting refills on iced tea, and when we got the bill, the server charged us for each refill! Not good. Next time, water! My sister Mary was our guest for this great lunch.

(215) 338-8643
9:00 --9:50 AM
Ramona: Scrapple, one egg, hashbrown, OJ, coffee, rye toast
Jim: Scrapple, two eggs, hashbrown, tomato juice, coffee, rye toast
Another must stop on any trip to Philly -- this diner is right around the corner from my parents' home, and they treated us to breakfast for our surprise visit. Scrapple is number one on the menu for a reason. Some think this is the same as "liver mush" sold in the wilds of North Carolina, but there is no similarity beyond the shape and how it is cooked (fried). The coffee was also great, and the service, with that wonderful Philly accent, is another treat.

Wawa #8009
6506 Frankford Ave.
Philadelphia, PA 19135

8:20 PM (Take out)
Ramona: Turkey and cheese shorti, Lays Classic Chips, Diet Coke, Tastykake chocolate cupcakes
Jim: Ham & Cheese shorti (with extra meat), Wawa pretzel, Snapple Green Tea, Tastykake jelly krimpets
The very best hoagies in Philly! Most of these stores are open 24 hours, and they are always crowded, so the turnover keeps everything perfectly fresh. The rolls they use are superb -- nothing like them in Texas at all. We did not make it to Jim's Steaks this short trip to Philly, but Wawa hoagies are a close second.
My, oh my what we wouldn't give for a Wawa in Waco!
