Ramona: Egg drop soup, egg roll, lemon chicken, fried rice, hot tea
Jim: Won ton soup, egg roll, Happy Family (chicken, pork, shrimp, scallops, Chinese vegetables), steamed rice, hot tea
Ramona's fortune: "Others see you as a fine person with great qualities" -- not a prediction nor a proverb, but the truth!
Jim's fortune: "Good luck is coming your way" -- we can only hope!
Jim was downtown for a meeting that ran past 5:00 PM, so he called Ramona at work and suggested we have a quick, delicious dinner at Magic China -- twice for this food in ten days, and at another of our favorite Chinese restaurants to boot!
There is not much to say! Like Cathy House, these two restaurants might have the same chefs. Notice I had the same dish as earlier in the week, and both were perfect. This now becomes a battle of locations for us, because both dining spots are near perfect.

Magic China

6:45 - 7:35 PM
$$ (low end -- pu-pu platter pushed it up a level)
Ramona: Egg drop soup, egg roll, Happy Family (chicken, pork, shrimp, scallops, Chinese vegetables), fried rice, iced tea
Jim: Won ton soup, egg roll, mu shu pork, hot tea
Shared: Pu-Pu Platter (2 fried shrimp, 2 egg rolls, 2 wings, 2 fried won tons, 2 chicken sticks
Outstanding meal! I spent the afternoon as an on-air "personality" for KWBU, our local NPR station during its Fall fund raiser. While I am on the subject, support your local NPR station with a pledge. It can be done on-line for most stations.
I haven't had mu shu pork in a while, and the thing I like about Magic China's version of this dish is they make the wraps before serving. Much neater, and the ingredients are spread more evenly among the four pancakes. The plum sauce was great, too. Ramona's usual dish is really amazing. Lots of delicious chicken, roast pork, shrimp, and scallops. I tasted a few items, and she still brought some home for lunch the next day. She also ate one of my wraps.
The pu-pu platter was good, except the fried won tons were lacking in taste this time, but the chicken sticks were much better than last time. They seemed to be more tasty and more tender than we remember. A must visit for all Chinese food fans in Waco!
Ramona's fortune: "Be prepared to receive something special"
Jim's fortune: "You have the ability to plan a practical course for yourself and follow through."

Magic China

5:00 - 6:10 PM
Ramona: Egg drop soup, egg roll, Happy Family (chicken, pork, shrimp, scallops, Chinese vegetables), fried rice, iced tea
Jim: Won ton soup, egg roll, Mini-bird's nest (shrimp, scallops, chicken, Chinese vegetables), fried rice, iced tea
Another excellent dinner. I was downtown helping to register people to vote, and I finished at five. Ramona left work at five and we met at one of our favorite sit-down Chinese restaurants. We talked about which was our favorite (Magic China or Cathay House), and we couldn't decide. The decor here is much nicer, but we came to the conclusion it is really a dead heat. The only real difference is in the menu. I think Magic has a slightly larger selection.
I guess the only fair thing is to alternate between the two!
Ramona's fortune: You love a good challenge.
Jim's fortune: Something wonderful is about to happen to you.

Jim: Won ton soup, spring roll, Dragon and Phoenix (shrimp, chicken, pea pods, mushrooms, baby corn, broccoli, carrots), hot tea
Shared: Pu pu platter (2 each of egg rolls, wings, chicken on a stick, shrimp, fried wonton)
Another excellent dinner, and we carried enough away for another meal. How do they do it? This also ends our anniversary weekend celebration.
Ramona's fortune: "You deserve to have a good time after a hard day's work" DUH!
Jim's fortune: "Your sly nature will get you out of a tight spot" Double DUH!

Dinner -- 2/14/08
Magic China
221 Jack Kultgen Hwy
(I-35 south bound access road)
Waco, TX 76706

6:10 - 7:15 PM
Ramona: Egg drop soup, egg roll, Shrimp with Chinese vegetables, fried rice, iced tea
Jim: Wonton soup, egg roll, Mini Bird's nest (chicken, shrimp, pork, scallops, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, broccoli, mushrooms, baby corn), fried rice, iced tea
Ramona's fortune: "You have found the love of your life. Hold on."
Jim's fortune: "You wear your heart on your sleeve."
For our Valentine's Dinner we had planned on going to 1424, but they threw us a curve. Ordinarily, they do not take reservations, but last night they did, and we could not be seated until 8:30, so we decided to go to Magic China.
Different, of course, but still an excellent dinner. They have the best wonton soup, egg rolls, and chinese chips. The food is plentiful and hot. Magic China is in an almost dead heat with Cathay House as our favorite sit-down Chinese restaurant.
