Ramona needed gas, so, since we were out, we decided to get something to eat. This situation always calls for Cheddar's -- excellent, quick, inexpensive, and fast.

Unable to decide, Jim mentioned he wanted chicken fried chicken, and to our surprise, the server told us it was an off menu item and available. He never thought there might be such things, and this is good information. Always ask! We never know what might show up on our plates.

Ramona's CFS was great as always.

Although the parking lot was full, every person must have driven alone, because we were immediately seated.

Our usual custom is to go straight to Cheddar's for dinner when we land in Waco after a trip, but we got in pretty late, so we passed, but promised ourselves a return to one of our favorite spots in Waco on Monday night.

Not really much to say! The food is dependable and delicious. Jim's son joined us and had chicken tenders and shrimp. He could not finish it all, and ended up taking almost half home. We were pleased to get a table immediately.

If you visit Waco, don't miss Cheddar's!

Neither of us was very hungry tonight, so we settled for the lovely (and filling) Oriental salad with grilled chicken and shrimp. This is a very tasty salad that I have had several times. Jim enjoyed it as much as I. The buttery croissant is a nice touch.

Regular followers of Jim & Ramona's Restaurant Journey may have noticed that we've been focusing more lately on the $-$$ restaurants. We're watching our budget these days as well as trying to watch our weight. So be prepared for more of these kinds of postings and fewer excursions with desserts!

In the mood for our weekly red meat feast, we decided on Cheddar's because of the quality of the steaks and the price. Both steaks were perfect. Ramona felt we could have both ordered the 8oz, and she would have shared part of hers with me. I was unwilling to risk it, especially since we are trying to cut down on red meat. Previously, I would have ordered the largest one available (14 oz.).

One thing missing from Cheddar's -- bread. True, a flaky, soft, warm, buttery, honey croissant came with our Caesar salad, but we wish they also served some rolls with dinner. The croissant is one reason we always get a Caesar salad.

We have talked about not writing up every visit to places like Cheddar's, unless we get something different or we have an unusual experience. What do our readers think?

Thursday night, we started out unsure where we wanted to go to dinner, just driving down Valley Mills. As we passed several places and kept saying, 'nah,' we finally decided on Cheddar's, our stand-by favorite. Usually when we know ahead of time we're going there, we go a little bit earlier to avoid the line. But this time we had to wait about 20 minutes, which gave us plenty of time to decide exactly what we wanted so we were ready to order as soon as we got a table.

The food was great, as it always is at Cheddar's. Our only complaint this time was where we were seated: in the bar area right beside the back door. As wait staff continuously were opening the door to deliver food and drinks to diners on the patio, we were greeted with hot air. One waiter dropped drinks on the floor beside us, not once but twice, as he was opening the door. We didn't get hit with the spill, but the drama associated with the cleaning up was a distraction. If we're ever taken in that direction again for a table, we will ask for another location.

Sunday night, away for the weekend, traveling all day, so this must be Cheddar's. We have decided to make this a tradition. When we are traveling, the first place we stop in Waco is Cheddar's.

We both felt like steaks, so this was a perfect meal. The only problem was a hovering waitress. She kept asking us if we wanted anything, and our iced tea glasses were right there, in full view, needing refilling! She lost some of her tip for that.

That did not detract from the meal however, the steaks were exactly as we requested -- medium rare, and the salads were delicious. The baked potatoes were a bit small, but good nonetheless.

As soon as we get all the servers at Cheddar's trained, it will be a perfect dining experience.

Another great meal at one of our favorite places. My son joined us, and he had a Cheddar Club sandwich and fries. This was our eleventh visit since starting this blog, and again the food was consistently good all around.

Cheddar's of Waco must win the award for most consistent quality food. We have never had a bad meal there.

Landed safely in Waco after a very bumpy ride from DFW, and, as is our custom when we arrive late, we headed straight to Cheddar's for a late dinner.

There is not much we can add. This is the most consistently good restaurants in Waco in terms of quality of food and service. It was surprisingly crowded this late, but we were seated in about 10 minutes. Still near the top of our favorite restaurant.

After two weeks away from home, and 30 hours in the car from Philadelphia, who could expect us to go home and cook dinner, so we headed directly to Cheddar's. The chicken pot pies were meaty and delicious, and perfect for a late dinner. Never a disappointment at Cheddar's.

After a tough week wrapping up a minimester class and an on-line graduate class, there was no way we could cook tonight. Cheddar's is always our first choice in this situation, and as we've said many times, we have never had a bad meal here. We also were seated immediately, so that was a plus. If you ever have a choice among chain restaurants, Cheddar's should be number one.

Jim: 11 oz. sirloin, baked potato and baby carrots. iced tea

Shared: onion rings with ranch and spicy sauce

This was the first time we got this appetizer, and it was delicious. the onions were crispy and the breading delicious. The steak was tender and juicy. I love chewing a piece of tender, medium rare steak for the juice and the wonderful taste. Most of the time, I eat my sides and only about 1/3 of the steak so I can savor the best part of the meal. Ramona's burger was huge, and she had to abandon part of the roll, along with a half dozen of the onion rings from the huge pile.

This was our 5th visit since we began this blog, and countless others since it opened about three years ago. It hasn't changed a bit. One of those rare places that has never disappointed us. What a great way to celebrate the end of the school year!

After 4 hours pitching for NPR here in Waco, (KWBU 103.3 FM -- KWBU.org -- Pledge Now and support public radio in Central Texas!), we were hungry, and Cheddar's was the logical place. Besides, we had not visited one of our favorite places in almost two weeks! After a short wait, we were seated and quickly received our food. The pot pie was steamy and full of large chunks of chicken. Ramona couldn't finish it, but it did not go to waste! The shrimp were a good size, and the sauce was great.

Twice in one week! Jim was not disappointed when some friends who were going to dinner with us said they'd never been to Cheddars. We were more than happy to share one of our favorite restaurants with them. We got there early enough that the wait wasn't too bad (about 20 minutes). Ramona couldn't turn down a $2.50 Marguerita while we waited in the bar. Though Cheddars is not one of our favorite places to go for steak, theirs is very good and Jim couldn't resist.

After a long day of traveling, nobody wants to go home and cook, so we went right from the airport to Cheddar's. This is almost a perfect little restaurant, and one of the best chains around. The food is great, the prices are reasonable, and the service from local college students is good. Unlike some chains, they don't hover over the table, constantly asking if everything is okay. We have never had a bad meal here. This Cheddar's is always dependable. The only problem is, the crowds have not slacked off, even though it has been open for more than two years.

R&J -- two iced teas (while waiting for a table)

Neither Ramona nor I had ever heard of or eaten at Cheddar's before it came to Waco about two years ago. We love it, and have been frequent visitors. The crowds that packed in when it first opened have not abated. The food is good and the prices are great. We almost always have a wait if we arrive after 5:00 PM -- especially on a Friday. While waiting in the bar, we ordered two iced teas and extra lemon. The waiter said, "I'll think about it," then brought us one extra piece of lemon and disappeared. No tip.

Ramona: Veggie plate (carrots, broccoli rice casserole, mashed potatoes, cole slaw) with baked potato soup and a honey butter croissant & iced tea

Jim: Honey Dijon chicken with mushrooms, seasoned rice, carrots, and broccoli casserole, caesar salad with honey butter croissant, & iced tea (This waiter brought us six extra pieces of lemon).

The food was excellent, although we did seem a bit rushed -- we had hardly started our soup and salad when they brought the entree. I guess when a restauarant is this crowded they have to move the plates.
